About RCFD
Established in 1921, the initial Ripon Fire District preceded the incorporation of the City of Ripon, covering one square mile with Main Street and Stockton Avenue being its epicenter. The district's first emergency fire apparatus consisted of a donated hand-drawn chemical tank on wheels. This historic equipment can still be seen on display at Station One in Ripon.
As time passed, the increase in both population and region caused the district to expand. The Ripon Rural Fire Protection District emerged in 1940, providing emergency services to rural areas. Volunteer firefighters constructed the Ripon Fire Station Two in 1950 using materials donated by Franzia Winery. In 1963, both districts - which had been sharing equipment and personnel - joined forces to establish the Ripon Consolidated Fire Protection District.
In 1974, they launched an Emergency Ambulance Service, becoming the first institution to provide Advanced Life Support (paramedics) to residents of San Joaquin County. The staff includes Full-time, Part-Time Volunteer, and Reserve personnel who operate firefighting apparatus while also being trained to handle hazardous materials incidents, water rescues, and technical search-and-rescue operations. To accommodate training needs, a fully-equipped classroom was established with facilities for nearly 50 attendees.
The Ripon Fire District unveiled its new four-story fire training tower in Ripon, California on January 21, 2006. This tower honors longtime Ripon inhabitants Howard and Mary Eichoff and serves as the focal point of the Eichoff Memorial Training Center. Built by WRG Fire Training Systems for approximately $450,000, it features two lined burn rooms – one equipped with propane-fueled props and another designed for normal combustible materials in a second-story attic location. Notably, Chief Dennis Bitters mentioned that funding for this unique facility came entirely from a donation to the Ripon Volunteer Firemen's Association.
Moving forward, the Ripon Fire District is dedicated to using its resources in the most efficient and effective manner possible, ensuring quality service for local citizens. Their mission statement highlights their commitment "to protect all the citizens within the Fire District from injury and loss due to natural and man-made disasters," achieved through well-trained, sufficiently-equipped emergency personnel responding to fire, medical, and various emergencies.
